FROM THE CAULDRON

Greetings, fellow health conscious/vintage/planet earth lovers…

Alrighty, here’s the whole lock, stock & barrel of my Lather Bee Rich soap journey…Several years ago, my one & only amazing son, Patrick, suggested that we try something different to do for a hobby – “Mom can we try to make our own home made soap.?”Well, it just seemed the right thing to do.. I was recovering from an illness and needed a creative outlet to help me keep my mind off of my issues, and with all my allergies and him with a keen interest in creating something artistic…we decided to give it a go.

We didn’t see the point in taking a course or researching so we just raced out and bought some supplies from a very worried looking clerk and away we went. Masked, gowned and scared to death, we went about creating our first rather “alien” looking batch of soap.. not the greatest, but it was soap and we were delighted. Not long after that, we got our first computer and actually started looking into recipes. We decided at that point maybe we should take a course to confirm that we were on the right page…amazingly we were already doing everything right!!

That’s when all the mystery and intrigue began. It wasn’t long before we located all the right ethically responsible suppliers and we were actually creating some really unique & wholesome soaps. We decided right there and then we would “superfat” our soaps the very best of oils and herbs to make it even more special. We always valued hemp oil for it’s hydrating and wholesome properties, then soon discovered meadowfoam oil and seabuckthorn and all the healing oils that we currently lace our soap with. With my background in pharmacy and his background in graphic design we really started going to town – researching hours on end for the perfect recipe adapted to our own specs. While I was in my secret lab (my kitchen) experimenting with the latest in herbal essential oils and fresh dried garden herbs Pat was in his own techni-lab researching earth friendly ways of packaging our beautiful creations.

It wasn’t long before we were meeting all kinds of wonderful people in outdoor markets and community and church sales and we were off to the races….The feedback was incredible – people were actually phoning us and wanting to know where they could buy more soap. This inspired us to research even further into making the ultimate move – -how about we design our own mould and design our own package… We found a Canadian company that make their moulds still the “old fashioned way”.. meticulously hand carved not by laser, and Pat worked diligently till he got our “vintage” look absolutely dazzling for our new shaped bar.

Vintage you may wonder…Why the late 1920’s & 1930’s look?

Many reasons, besides loving the intrigue of the vaudeville/jazz era, it was a time of social/economic revolution. People were much closer to their neighbor and helped each other out during these hard times – they knew how to make something out of nothing to make ends meet, but at the same time, they seemed to enjoy each day as though it were their last. Something we can take to heart today..It was a fascinating time in history. And, It just so happens that the names we chose for each soap is based on someone in our family that we love..hence Dapper Dan (Grampa) Papa Bob(Grampa) Corky’s (Grama) Blazin Betty (Great Gram Elizabeth) Lusty Lulu (Grama – she may not have been too thrilled with that one) and last but not least Dollface (after a very beautiful Aunty). Don’t worry special relatives we’re not done yet. We have lots more on the drawing board for later on, so keep checking us out or subscribe.

So, now we only had one thing left to do – what material will we use to put our soaps in? After more research and much discussion with our “earth friendly” friends and colleges (check out the Carbon Environmental Boutique in Edmonton), we decided that tin is by far the best way to go – and Pat certainly hit the nail on the head with his shape, design, colours and authenticity. I am just busting my buttons as you can tell and he has already achieved world wide accolades for the designs he created to honor some very special people. Below are some of the websites we were featured on:

The Die line
Lovely Package
Stationerystyle
Curly Girly

We will also be featured in the most beautiful packaging examples in the world. We are so excited!!

The tin itself is a gorgeous little storage box and we have a whole page devoted to the merit of tin and why we chose it over a paper or plastic product. We love the idea that it is virtually totally recyclable/biodegradable – oh, yes, the printing on the tins themselves use vegetable inks. The natural stuffing is made from RECAPTURED PINE EXCELSIOR SHAVINGS that would otherwise end up in a landfill. We are very ambitious and plan on adding more inventory in the future, but we need to get our proverbial “feet wet” first so, Cathie’s Cauldron will be used to keep all our customers and friends abreast of new products and upcoming events.

At this time I truly want to thank all of our devoted patrons and family (especially my husband) for being so very patient with us while all of this blather was going on preparing for this day. But it’s finally here and we are absolutely delighted to say that the Lather Bee Rich is now open for business and we plan on making you very happy….

Cheers & chuckles
